Rice was a well-known crook who frequently took advantage of motorists traveling along Route 66 by pretending to be a member of the law enforcement community. When Rice was wounded and $450 taken from his trade store in 1967 by an unknown man named Billy Ray White, his unscrupulous activities finally caught up with him. Budville was run by Bud’s wife until her death in the late 1970s; upon her passing, the Trading Post was abandoned and now stands as a stark reminder of the proverb “You reap what you sow.”
