7. CV90 AMOS

Sweden’s CV90 AMOS (Advanced MOrtar System) surprises our list and transforms the idea of mobile fire support. Twin 120mm automated mortars atop a very mobile armoured vehicle chassis make up this creative platform. Unprecedented tactical flexibility is given by the system’s capacity to execute Multiple Rounds Simultaneous hit (MRSI) missions, whereby up to 16 rounds can be fired to hit simultaneously on the same target. Equally useful in urban warfare and conventional operations, the AMOS can engage targets with both direct and indirect fire. Its sophisticated fire control system allows it—a capacity until unheard of in mortar systems—to engage moving targets while on the move. The way the platform combines battlefield management systems with modern digital communications guarantees flawless cooperation with other units.

8. HIMARS

A lightweight, highly mobile artillery platform able to deliver accuracy attacks over long distances, the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is Mounted on a conventional tactical truck chassis, HIMARS combines great strategic mobility with the firepower of more massive rocket artillery weapons. Its transportability by C-130 planes allows quick deployment to any theatre of operations. The superior fire control and targeting technologies of the system help to minimise collateral damage by allowing exact engagement of high-value targets.
