The Chow Chow is not hypoallergenic, and its small, strong form is coated in a thick, fluffy coat. In China, the breed is referred to as the “Songshi Quan,” which means “puffy lion.” The maximum weight for this breed of dog is 71 pounds. It was developed in China as an “all-purpose” dog that could be used for labor, hunting, guarding, and protection.

You may not want to consider this breed if you’re searching for a clever dog. The Chow Chow routinely ranks among the least intelligent and trainable dogs while being adorable and incredibly devoted. They make up for it, though, with their attractiveness and protective nature.
Owning a Chow Chow may be challenging for Americans, as they are the most banned dog breed in the country due to their violent nature and high socialization and training requirements. Owners of Chow Chows, however, would contest their reputation as vicious dogs. In December 2020, Barney, a Chow Chow, was featured as the “Pet of the Week” on a nearby ABC station.
