“The Queen of Catfish”
Gale Hooper, an 18-year-old from Memphis, Tennessee, was crowned “The Queen of Catfish” in 1954. She is shown in the picture with one hand clutching a 25-kilogram fish.
The distinction of this competition was that it assessed women’s proficiency handling fish and other seafood. In addition to identifying various seafood varieties and cleaning and preparing fish, contestants had to demonstrate their expertise of the seafood sector.
