The 17-year-old New Yorker Jani Carroll was crowned “Miss Sweater” in 1956.
This was not your typical beauty contest where the judges focused more on a woman’s knitting skills and sweater modeling abilities than on her physical attractiveness. Each competitor was required to knit a sweater by hand and then present it on stage.
