4. You Are My Sunshine – Johnny Cash

We have to admit: we simply recognized the little tune usually performed to young children; we did not even aware this was a full song. Cash created a sorrowful song about a lover who no longer felt the same way about him, however the shorter lullaby version is merely a lovely song about someone who makes you happy. We appreciate our parents leaving that portion of the loving song we grew up listening to!
The real meaning of this song clearly depresses the version our parents used to sing to us; but, now the phrase “please don’t take my sunshine away” makes far more sense. Though Johnny Cash helped to popularize this song, Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell wrote it in 1939. But Cash’s performance gave the songs fresh complexity with his unique voice and expressive delivery. The song’s entire form exposes a story of unmet love and the agony of losing someone close. Lines like “I’ll always love you and make you happy, if you will only say the same” and “you have shattered all of my dreams” depict a relationship in crisis far off from the joyful tone of the chorus. The sad juxtaposition created by the lively, well-known chorus against the melancholy verses addresses the complexity of love and loss. The song’s development from a country ballad to a children’s lullaby shows how creatively one may reinterpret and repurpose music across generations—sometimes losing its original setting in the process.
