8. 500 Cans of Pineapple
Given to the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II
Donated by: The Government of Queensland; estimated value: $790*
After marrying in 1947, Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh were showered with presents to commemorate their marriage. Among the many unique gifts they were given were five hundred pineapple containers. Although it might have appeared like an odd gift, this was a really well-thought-out purchase.

Following World War II, Britain experienced economic hardship and frequent food shortages. The British people were tremendously appreciative of Queensland’s incredibly generous gift of 500 tins of canned pineapple. The pineapple tins were to be distributed at the Queen’s exclusive discretion, and each can had its own gift label.
