5. That’s One Foxy Fox

Little naughty animals, foxes are said to be But who would have guessed that they would also be so clever at wreaking havoc during your morning cup of coffee? These lovely creatures are known for their cunning, hence our design definitely captures their amusing attitude. Perhaps they find it offensive to be used as a cute and artistic tiny holder for hot drinks, and their method of retribution is to gently stab the eyes of anybody attempts a basic sip. Although meant to be appealing, this unusual design decision could cause users unanticipated discomfort. This is a perfect illustration of someone who had a brilliant idea but just did not consider testing it before mass-producing it and distributing it to the globe. Though it’s a great idea to mix whimsy with utility, it has to be done carefully to make sure it improves rather than compromises the user experience. This mug with its fox motif reminds us ultimately that even the most imaginative ideas must be carefully considered and tested to prevent unanticipated effects.

6. Drive or Die

This public service announcement would really be rather successful without the yellow symbol denoting “safely.” Though it would still be a little bit perplexing; after all, is it advising not to drive or not die? Second thought: perhaps it also wants to add, “Do Drive Safely.” Though none of the several ideas of what this sign could be trying to convey make total sense. The uncertainty of the message leaves drivers wondering about the actual meaning of the phrase. There are lines like “do die safely,” “don’t drive safely,” “don’t die safely,” or “do drive safely,” which would help to sum all the alternatives of signals this sign could be aiming to transmit. Just the last one of these choices would make any logical sense. This uncertainty emphasises in public safety communications the need of effective communication. A sign meant to encourage safe driving generates more questions than it solves, therefore negating its intended use. It reminds us that, particularly with regard to issues of life and death on the road, design clarity is absolutely vital.
