By 2014, the $62 billion estimated cost had already increased to $79 billion, and further increases are anticipated.

Among the several difficulties this protracted endeavor would encounter were claims made by a portion of the 300,000 people who were relocated as a result of land reclamation that they were coerced into signing relocation contracts. There have also been worries that the region of the Pacific Ocean into which the Yangtze River empties could suffer significant ecological harm if this massive volume of water is moved. The South-North Water Transfer Project is still anticipated to be finished by 2050, notwithstanding these disputes.
