14. The Royal Adelaide Hospital

Location: Australia’s Adelaide
Total Expense: $1.61 Billion* Completed Year: 2017
The 175-year-old Adelaide Hospital was to be replaced by the Royal Adelaide Hospital, but it accomplished much more than that. The state’s most costly and largest hospital to date is South Australia’s recently constructed state-owned facility, known as “the Rah.”

A little over $1.6 billion was spent on this joint venture between Hansen Yuncken and Leighton Contractors. But now that it was finished, the Royal Adelaide Hospital had adequate space for forty operating rooms, each spanning 700 square feet. Additionally, it will hire up to 6,000 workers. “The Rah” is intended to collect rainwater for later use and, in comparison, cut its greenhouse gas emissions by half.
