When the Yamaha MOTIV.e was shown as a concept car in 2013, the company—best known for its motorcycles and boat accessories—took a startling turn. The MOTIV.e, which was created in association with Gordon Murray Design, represented Yamaha’s desire to enter the city automobile market. Its small stature, nimble handling, and unique design—which included an incredibly contemporary, even futuristic look—represented Yamaha’s goal to infuse the excitement of motorcycling into a four-wheeled city automobile.

The Yamaha MOTIV.e, though, never made it from a concept car to a production model, despite the hype it generated. Though others blame the steep costs and regulatory barriers associated with entering the cutthroat automotive industry, the causes are speculative.
