Large natural pearls and more uncommon dark grey pearls made up the pearl thread. Diana appeared in pictures wearing the necklace on numerous occasions, one of which was during a mid-1980s visit to a Red Cross home in Tokyo for children with disabilities. The photo taken at a Royal function in Austria in 1986 coincided with her visit to the Red Cross.
