Sugar, like flour, likes to accumulate in the kitchen until it is completely depleted. It can appear like an enduring product that’s useful to have in the cupboard in case a cake needs to be baked for people who don’t use it very often. We tend to forget that it expires, just like a lot of other things.

Every two years, sugar needs to be thrown out and replaced to maintain its quality and flavor. Having said that, as sugar doesn’t actually spoil, there is no specific time after which it should be avoided. The quality simply starts to deteriorate as soon as it’s opened.
