12. Chocolate

Expires: One year after the date of manufacturing.
* Average Cost: $2.27 per bar
Chocolate that has expired is okay to consume, though it will probably be stale, according to Medical Daily. Unlike dairy products or meat, chocolate does not have an expiration date; therefore, there is no use-by date that you must fulfill before the product becomes hazardous. It does, however, carry a “best by” date, which indicates that the quality won’t be at its “best” once that date has passed.

Chocolate that has gone bad usually tastes stale. There may be a softer consistency. You won’t hear a “crack” sound if you break the bar in half. The flavor strength of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, will diminish.
