You should be able to determine if your shampoo and conditioner are about to expire. The shampoo or conditioner will become off-color, smell funny, and alter in texture and hue. Shampoo may become less foamy and cause stickiness in your hair. The shampoo or conditioner may smell bad if the contents split, leaving your hair much dirtier than before.

After three years, you should discard your shampoo and conditioner, even if they are still unopened. It’s possible for germs from expired shampoo or conditioner to enter your hair and cause a scalp infection that causes redness, blisters, and irritation. Hair loss could even result from scalp diseases.
