Dassault Aviation, a French firm comparable to US weaponry makers like General Dynamics, created the Dassault Breguet Mirage. The series of supersonic fighter jets with delta wings was dubbed Mirage, and the most successful model in the series was the Mirage III.

Later, in addition to Dassault Aviation, other certified contractors would also produce the III. Every Mirage had the same fundamental airframe design. Their powerplant capabilities and equipment were different. Later Mirage planes had canard foreplanes added on, but earlier Mirage planes had no tails at all.
