March 1959 saw the introduction of the Marine Corps’ second-generation main combat tank. 1963 saw the deactivation of the Marines’ heavy tank battalion, with the exception of the M60 Patton second generation. Thus, the M60 Patton became useful when the Cold War sprang out. During the Cold War, it was designated as the primary battle tank for all US forces.
