The surreal image in this photo is so vivid that it almost seems like Salvador Dali artwork. However, as the National Geographic photographer Hamish Mitchell can attest, it’s all too true. He captured this image at Namibia’s Namib-Naukluft Park. Next to Sossusvlei lies a white clay salt pan called Deadvlei.

The name Deadvlei means “Dead Marsh” in translation. The red sand dunes that rise to a height of 350 feet behind the white clay create an effect reminiscent of the sky. Dead camel-thorn trees, which date back between 600 and 700 years, are scattered across the countryside. The whole scene is really bizarre because the dunes have cut off the water from the burnt trees.
