This image of a mother and her son Rhesus Macaques was taken by nature photographer Yasmina Ahdab. The mother clutching her son’s hand demonstrates how these primates “prioritize family,” according to Ahdab. Nobody understands why the son has alopecia, a surprisingly prevalent condition in the colonies of this species.

Rhesus macaques belong to a family of 45 species of monkeys that also includes baboons and guenons. The ability of these monkeys to store food in their large cheek pouches is well known. This ability is useful when the monkeys are trying to find food on the ground while avoiding predators.
