This image of a Galapagos tortoise was captured by Yasmina Ahdab, who also wrote about the turtle’s “complicated past with humans.” Sadly, because people have always been the only predators for tortoises, their population has declined from 250,000 in the 1500s to 3,000 in the 1970s. The environments of the Galapagos Islands have been devastated by humans, who have also overhunted and brought invasive species into the area.

Thankfully, there are breeding initiatives in place to help repair the harm caused by humans, and these initiatives have made headway. The population is still increasing, having surpassed 19,000, thanks to conservation initiatives. Hopefully, the population growth trend continues.
