An elephant seal is not someone you want to mess with when he’s not feeling well. Hopefully, Paul Nicklen was far enough away from the marine creature to avoid being in its line of sight when he shot this picture. Thankfully, elephant seal populations increased over time as a result of increased conservation efforts after they came dangerously close to extinction in the late 1800s.

Elephant seals can occasionally be hostile and pose a threat to beaches in the Pacific. A human bone might be easily broken by even a little bite from one of the enormous incisors on the seal. This seal appears to need some space, though we’re not sure why he’s so upset.
