121. Hometown Under Construction

Possible Camera Used: Huawei Mate 30 Pro
Where to Buy: eBay
Cost: $1,299*
Titled “Hometown Under Construction,” photographer @littlegrass snapped this shot with a Huawei Mate 30 Pro (which you can find for $1,299 on eBay). @littlegrass took “Construction” near the construction point of a highway project, where foundation for the road was being excavated.

The photographer noted the “contrast” between the warm tones of the soil foundation and the cool tones of the sky. Originally, @littlegrass was going to shoot the site without anyone in it. However, when two people showed up with their own camera equipment, ostensibly to do some landscape photography themselves, @littlegrass snapped the picture with them in it.

122. Broken Chair

Possible Camera Used: Sony A9
Where to Buy: Sony
Cost: $3,999.99*
This photo seems almost surreal, as there is more going on in it than meets the eye at the first glance. At first, it looks like a regular nature scene, with bright yellow flowers and green and brown grass everywhere. Then, when you look a little more closely at the wicker chair, you’ll see that it’s broken and not as picturesque as you thought it was.

In the background is a cityscape, which looks out of place next to such an idyllic field. A camera that could have captured this detailed, nature-filled shot is the Sony A9, a favorite among landscape photographers. The camera costs just under $4,000.

123. Sandy Sea Lion

Possible Camera Used: Panasonic LUMIX FZ3
Where to Buy: Amazon
Cost: $448*
This beautiful picture of a mother and baby seal is enough to warm anyone’s heart. Taken by Yasmina Ahdab Photography (Instagram: @yasmina.nour.photography), the person behind the camera had quite a bit to say about these Galapagos sea lions, which are the smallest sea lion species in the world.

Sandy Sea Lion @yasmina.nour.photography / Instagram.com
They are common to the Galapagos Islands, and, according to Ahdab, they are “curious and social.” You can often find them playing on beaches and sunbathing, though they can dive up to 2,000 feet under the surface of the sea, if need be. A camera that could have captured such a detailed natural shot is the Panasonic LUMIX FZ3, which you can find on Amazon for $448.

124. Tropical Flowers

Possible Camera Used: Ricoh GR III
Where to Buy: Amazon
Cost: $897*
Another gem from Yasmina Ahdab is this up-close photograph of a flower in Costa Rica. Yasmina captioned the photo, “the intricacies of life.” The flower pictured is one of millions in the flora-rich area. Though it isn’t the same purple as the guaria morada, the national flower of Costa Rica, this delicate, gorgeous flower makes for a colorful picture.

One of the best cameras for colorful photos is the Ricoh GR III. You can find this digital compact camera on Amazon for $897, making it at least a little cheaper than some of the thousand-dollar cameras we have seen on this list.

125. Waterlines

Possible Camera Used: Olympus OM-D E-M1X
Where to Buy: BH Photo-Video-Audio
Cost: $1,699*
Mikko Lagerstedt took this photo to celebrate Finland’s Independence Day. He explained his motive behind the photo, saying that, in Finland, there are only a few hours of light in the winter. However, Lagerstedt is not deterred, as he finds the “beautiful subtle light” of the season a reason to take photos, despite the cold temperature.

Waterlines @mikkolagerstedt / Instagram.com
This photo is part of one of five themes in Lagerstedt’s book, Landscapes with Soul. The contrast of the white snow against the dark water is stunning. The Olympus OM-D E-M1X is one of the most winter-ready cameras, and it’ll go with you wherever you want, no matter the chill.

126. Aurora Borealis

Possible Camera Used: Nikon D810
Where to Buy: Amazon
Cost: $850*
Taken in Norway by Mikko Lagerstedt, this photo is yet another from his landscape series. The Aurora Borealis is one of the most beautiful natural sites in the world, and Lagerstedt captured this photo in a way that makes the lights look even more surreal than usual.

Aurora Borealis @mikkolagerstedt / Instagram.com
The lights come from the Earth’s magnetic field interacting with the sun’s charged particles. Though you’ll have to brave a cold night out, it is worth seeing the Borealis, which you can find in the highest northern latitudes of the word. The Nikon D810 is excellent at capturing low-light photographs while keeping the vivid colors of the object of the picture.

127. Lonely Island

Possible Camera Used:  Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R
Where to Buy: BH-Photo-Video-Audio
Cost: $3,698*
Another surreal photo from Mikko Lagerstedt, this one is the epitome of loneliness. It features a small tree on an island alone, with only its reflection to keep it company. Even though trees don’t have feelings, there’s still an element of sadness to the picture.

Lonely Island @mikkolagerstedt / Instagram.com
The reflection mimics the tree exactly, and, if you were to flip the photo upside-down, you could barely tell the difference between the two. A camera that is great at this type of precise, detailed photography is the Panasonic Lumix DC-S1R, which you can find from BH-Photo-Video-Audio for $3,698.

128. Fight Of Passion

Possible Camera Used: Fujifilm X-T10
Where to Buy: Walmart
Cost: $999*
Another photo from Yasmina Ahdab is this shot, which she took on Fernandina Island. Fernandina, located in the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador, is amazing not just because of its natural wildlife (as pictured here with these two angry iguanas), but also for its volcanoes.

Fight Of Passion @yasmina.nour.photography / Instagram.com
Fernandina is the most pristine, active of all of the volcanoes of the Galapagos. Fernandina’s land iguana population lives on the rim of the volcano’s caldera, as well as its depths. These iguanas can grow up to three feet long, and they subsist on a diet of prickly pear cacti. An adventure-ready camera that could work for this type of natural photography is the Fujifilm X-T10.

129. Mid-Century Modern

Possible Camera Used: iPhone
Where to Buy: Apple
Cost: $500-$1,500*
This photo was taken by @hoodmidcenturymodern on Instagram in Atlanta, Georgia. The picture shows off the architecture of Atlanta, which is both modern and historical, depending where you are in the city. A lot of this account’s photos feature what the artist calls, “mid-century modern design in the hood.”

Mid-Century Modern @hoodmidcenturymodern / Instagram.com
The pictures from @hoodmidcenturymodern are an eclectic collection of urban design. Mid-century modern design, for those who don’t know, was a movement in architecture that was popular during the post-WWII period from 1945 until 1969. Even now, this wave still has influence over the furniture and architecture we see today, decades later.

130. Angry Elephant Seal

Possible Camera Used: Fujifilm X-T10
Where to Buy: Walmart
Cost: $999*
You don’t want to mess with an elephant seal when he’s having a bad day. Hopefully, Paul Nicklen was far enough away when he took this photograph that he didn’t get in the line of view of this sea creature. Elephant seals almost went extinct in the late 1800s, but their number recovered, thankfully, as time went on and conservation efforts mounted.

Angry Elephant Seal @paulnicklen / Instagram.com
There are occasionally aggressive elephant seals that menace Pacific beaches. Even a small bite from one of the seal’s huge incisors could easily break a human bone. We’re not sure what this seal is so mad about, but he seems like he needs some space.

131. Twinning

Possible Camera Used: Nikon P1000
Where to Buy: Nikon USA
Cost: $1,000*
Taken by @thedogist in Murray Hill on 37th & Park Ave., this photo features what the photographer called a “crotchety old man.” After this old pup goes to the bathroom outside, he runs into the house and grabs a toy. One time, he even picked up the owner’s cat, as he has a toy that looks similar, and got confused.

Twinning @thedogist / Instagram.com
The Nikon P1000 is a great camera for this type of focused photography. You can find the P1000 at Nikon USA for $1,000, but, unfortunately, it is out of stock. You’ll have to look on gently-used sites if you want to buy a P1000.

132. Adrenaline Rush

Possible Camera Used: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Where to Buy: eBay
Cost: $250*
Jimmy Chin, a climber and photographer, published this photo and many others in his book, There and Back. There and Back covered twenty years’ worth of expeditions across all of the seven continents, and most of the shots featured were mind-bendingly high photographs like this one.

Adrenaline Rush @paulnicklen / Instagram.com
According to Mountain Guides, one of the best cameras for climbing photography is the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, complete with an upstrap. The mountaineer, Adam Angel, said he scaled Rainier with this camera, as well as a Singh-Ray polarizer, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens, and a Lowepro Outback 200 Modular Beltpack.

133. Penguin Love

Possible Camera Used: Olympus OM-D E-M1X
Where to Buy: BH Photo-Video-Audio
Cost: $1,699*
Parenthood is a beautiful thing for all species, and penguins are no exception. Paul Nicklen took this photo of two penguins cuddling with their baby on the Ross Sea in Antarctica. According to Nicklen, there is a lot that goes into raising a baby Emperor Penguin.

Penguin Love @paulnicklen / Instagram.com
One parent hunts at sea to get food for the baby, while the other waits at home, keeping him or her warm and safe. Nicklen said that he hopes his photo will make people realize that there is a lot more of humankind in species that we may consider “so different” from us.

134. Giant Tortoise

Possible Camera Used: Nikon P1000
Where to Buy: Nikon USA
Cost: $1,000*
Yasmina Ahdab took this photo of a Galapagos tortoise, describing the reptile’s “complicated past with humans.” Unfortunately, we have historically been the tortoise’s only predator, causing a decrease in the population from 250,000 in the 1500s to 3,000 in the 1970s. Humans have destroyed the Galapagos’ habitats, over-hunted them, and introduced invasive species to their homes.

Giant Tortoise @yasmina.nour.photography / Instagram.com
There are some breeding programs to help undo the damage that humans have done, and these programs have, thankfully, shown progress. Thanks to conservation efforts, the population has reached more than 19,000 and is still growing. Hopefully, that trend of an increasing population continues.

135. “Rock Runner”

Possible Camera Used: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII
Where to Buy: Best Buy
Cost: $1,300*
Paul Nicklen took this photo of a rock runner named Ha’a Keaulana. Keaulana, as part of her training regimen for surfing, carries a fifty-pound boulder across the seafloor of Makaha, Hawaii. Keulana’s training helps her prepare in case waves knock her down and send her into the swirling undertow of the ocean.

“Rock Runner” @paulnicklen / Instagram.com
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 VII is one of the best cameras for underwater photography. You can find it at Best Buy for $1,300. It is tough as nails, and you don’t have to worry about it rusting as it captures precise, clear images like this one.
