The Fern Brooch, which Kate Middleton is wearing, is actually a loan from Queen Elizabeth II. After being elected Queen, Queen Elizabeth II traveled the nation in the early 1950s and accepted the brooch as a gift from the women of Auckland, New Zealand.

Two Cartier fern-spray brooches that belonged to Ernest Cassel should not be confused with the platinum fern brooch. He ordered them in 1903 as a present for his sister Wilhelmina. Much more ostentatious is the Platinum Fern Brooch from New Zealand. In 2014, Kate Middleton was spotted touring New Zealand on her own and sporting the Fern Brooch. Given the diamonds and platinum, even though the actual cost is unknown, it is most likely very valuable.
