Warplane manufacturing is somewhat more recent than other areas of the defence sector. The Wright Brothers competed fiercely to create the Wright Military Flyer in 1909 for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, which became the first aircraft built expressly for the military. In the twenty-first century, it is not unusual for advanced military aircraft to cost close to $1 billion.
