2.Jabba the Snowman

You will know from past experience building a snowman that it is not as simple as it sounds. Working with snow as a media presents several difficult tasks. Apart from the difficulty of working with bare hands for long stretches of time, the consistency and texture of the snow itself can provide major difficulties. Notwithstanding these challenges, one gifted snow artist set out the arduous endeavour of completely recreating one of Star Wars’ most famous villains – Jabba the Hutt – totally out of snow. The outcome is really amazing, catching the great bulk as well as the minute features of the infamous crime boss. The sculptor was quite adept in getting the right dimensions and facial traits that would make Jabba immediately identifiable. From the unique slug-like body form to the minute wrinkles and folds defining Jabba’s visage, every element has been painstakingly created. The fact that they were able to preserve the structural integrity of such a big horizontal snow sculpture—much more difficult than creating a conventional vertical snowman—makes this work even more remarkable. The completed work shows evidence of the artist’s great awareness of working with snow as a sculptural media as well as their patience.
