6. Digestive System Specialization

Designed over millions of years to process one of the toughest diets in the animal kingdom, the sloth’s digestive tract is an evolutionary wonder. Comprising up to one-third of their body weight, their multi-chambered stomach supports a sophisticated colony of symbiotic bacteria and microbes that break down the stiff cellulose in leaves. The slowest digesting rate of any mammal, this specialised system takes up to 50 days to finish one meal. Unique muscle walls of the stomach chambers have developed to maximise nutrient extraction by contracting in particular sequences. Their very long digestive track has also evolved to enable maximum nutrient absorption and prolonged meal processing time. Specialised enzymes created by the liver and pancreas break down harmful toxins contained in many plants in concert with gut microbes. This complex mechanism shows how evolution may produce extremely specialised answers to food problems since it lets sloths subsist on a diet that would be nutritionally inadequate for most other mammals.
