Researchers just figured out the solution to this puzzle. The similarity to Rembrandt’s wife was more noticeable on x-ray pictures. It turns out that the author altered the image when he was being taken away by Hertier Dirks, following the loss of his wife. Danae’s facial features in the artwork were altered such that they incorporated elements of both of the painters’ favorite female characters.
