A century can bring about a lot of change in a municipality. This definitely applies to Holland Island, a piece of land in the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Holland vanished, not merely changed. The island was first populated in the 1600s, and by 1910, there were only 300 residents living there.

There were houses, a post office, a school, and a church on Holland, and most of the residents were families and fishermen. Unfortunately, erosion forced the island’s west side to collapse, leaving Holland abandoned. By 1918, the families were forced to relocate due to rising sea levels, and now all that’s left are the remnants of a single, two-story house. That will eventually give way beneath the waves of Chesapeake Bay.
