A live rat in a box with a message that said “my name is Sue” was sent to sportswriter Susan Fornoff of the Sacramento Bee by former major league pitcher Dave Kingman in 1986 while he was with the Oakland Athletics. Kingman was fined $3,500 for the incident.

Fornoff revealed Kingman’s statement that “women don’t belong in the clubhouse,” which led to the historic confrontation. Even when he issued an apology, the MLB fined Kingman a significant amount. No matter how enraged players may become with the media, the episode serves as a warning that such actions are never appropriate.
