3. British Astute Class Submarine

The UK’s Royal Navy now operates submarines of the Astute class, which is the newest model. These SSNs are equipped with armament payloads, enhanced communications facilities, and stealth capabilities. At Barrow-in-Furness, BAE Systems Maritime Submarines is building the Astute class. Three are now in use, while seven are planned.

Astute spans more than 318 feet. It is equipped with a Raytheon Successor IFF, an Atlas DESO 25 echo-sounder, and Thales sonar. Up to 38 armaments, including Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes, can be stored inside. The Astute class’s test depth is more than 984 feet. The reactor was constructed by luxury vehicle manufacturer Rolls-Royce.
