15.Being Gluten Intolerant Is No Joke
Since this one looks more worrying than anything else, we’re not sure whether it’s hilarious. The back of this chocolate said: “We are not gluten-free or organic certified (because it’s bulS%#).” Although it was promoted as such.
The trouble is that this deceptive product can cause major effects for some people who truly are gluten intolerant. This is a quite severe case of misleading packaging that transcends simple dishonesty and enters the field of possible health risks. Eating gluten can cause major medical problems for those with celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance. Not only perplexing but also perhaps dangerous is the contradicting information on the package: it claims to be gluten-free on the front while disclaiming this on the back. This event begs important issues about food labelling rules and the certification process for dietary claims with special relevance. It also emphasises the need of food producers in offering accurate, consistent information all over their packaging. Especially alarming is the flippant attitude shown in the back-label remark (“because it’s bulS%#”), which implies a disrespect of the gravity of dietary restrictions. This situation could have legal consequences for the business and reminds us of the need of strict control in food labelling, particularly for goods aimed at certain dietary requirements.
