8. The Galley of Whydah

Though piracy was a very real threat in those days, the crew of the Whydah Galley probably never imagined they would be taken prisoner by pirates on their first journey. Regretfully, that’s just what took place. When poor weather forced the Whydah to sink in 1717, Captain Black Sam got his comeuppance.

The ship and all of the treasure it contained sank to the bottom of the icy sea. This is all really true, despite the fact that it sounds like something from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean. The assets the ship was transporting are estimated to be worth a total of $120 million. The ship was discovered in 1984.
