A massive tsunami 1,700 years ago carried away the ancient Roman city of Neapolis. Even though tsunamis are known to be extremely destructive, it would take a particularly strong one to wipe out a whole city in one go. An archaeological mission found the lost city again eleven years ago.

Numerous intriguing discoveries were made in Neapolis, such as streets, monuments, and 100 tanks that were used to produce garum. Ancient Greeks and Romans frequently used garum, a fermented fish sauce, as a condiment. Based on this remarkable finding, the manufacture of garum had to have played a significant role in Neapolis’ economy.
