The Portofino Jesus, sometimes referred to as the Christ of the Abyss, was found in the Mediterranean between Camogli and Portofino. Fascinatingly, duplicate casts of this identical monument have been found in museums, churches, and underwater locales all across the world. Sculptor Guido Galletti designed the submerged bronze statue.

In 1954, the original Portofino Jesus was purposefully submerged in the ocean. It was created in Dario Gonzatti’s honor, who was the first Italian diver to employ SCUBA equipment. The nine-foot-tall statue, which shows Jesus giving a benediction with his hands and head raised skyward, was erected near the spot where Gonzatti passed away in 1947.
