In 1840, the North Carolina went down, but it wasn’t just any old steamship. It had a ton of gold in it. Divers visiting the site in 2019 discovered gold coins valued at tens of millions of dollars, despite the fact that the wreck itself was discovered previously.

Everyone involved was so taken aback by it that it made national headlines. When the ship sank, only one passenger reported having lost $15,000. In today’s currency, that was a sizable sum at the time. For apparent reasons, the wreck continues to draw attention from many enthusiastic divers.
