9. The Spitzkoppe Granite Peaks

Rising sharply from the desert plain, the 1,728-meter Spitzkoppe is sometimes referred to as the “Matterhorn of Namibia.” Created more than 700 million years ago, these granite mountains are among the oldest known geological formations on Earth. Iron oxide coating on the granite surface produces the unique reddish-orange colour; millions of years of erosion provide the smooth, rounded forms. The area boasts many natural arches, rock pools, and places of old rock art. Rare succulents and lichens are among the specialised plant life that the unusual geological formations support. One of Namibia’s most photographed natural wonders is created at sunrise and dusk when the mountains radiate a brilliant golden-red glow.
