8. The Moving Dunes of the Namib Sand Sea

Some of the most energetic dune systems in the world are found at the UNESCO World Heritage site Namib Sand Sea. Constantly in motion, these enormous sand formations are moulded by dominant winds producing intricate patterns and shapes. Each of the several types of dunes—star, linear, crescent-shaped barchans—tells a tale about wind direction and sand movement. Sand, wind, and time mix to produce an always shifting scene where dunes can migrate several meters every year. Many of the desert species found nowhere else on Earth find unique adaptations supported by this volatile habitat.
