3. The Skeleton Coast’s Ghost Ships

Named for the many shipwrecks dotting its coast, the eerie Skeleton Coast runs north along Namibia. Where the Atlantic Ocean meets the desert, this far-off and enigmatic area holds the remnants of innumerable vessels lost to changing sandbanks, heavy fog banks, and dangerous currents. Now sitting several hundred meters inland, the most well-known wreck, the Eduard Bohlen, results from the encroaching shoreline of the desert. Cold Antarctic currents meeting hot desert air produce a special microclimate that results in recurring fog banks sustaining shockingly high levels of life. This apparently hostile habitat supports desert-adapted lions, elephants, and several kinds of seals, therefore attesting to the resiliency of nature.
