The Hope family chose to sell the stone to Pierre Cartier because they were about to go bankrupt. Cartier was nearly out of desperation to find a buyer for such a costly embellishment when Evelyn Walsh Macklin, an American, appeared out of nowhere. The woman was agnostic, a fan of jazz music and culture, and she lived in opulence and champagne.
