3. Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana

The audience of this song has not particularly misinterpreted it; Kurt Cobain himself has done, and the narrative is simply too humorous to exclude from the list. Inspired by the well-known deodorant brand his then-girlfriend wore, a buddy of the band scrawled “Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit” on Cobain’s wall back then. Kurt understood Teen Spirit as more of a notion of a rebellious spirit than a real scent or product, hence this completely went over his head.
Later, he wanted to be about his ideas about his generation and what he felt about his environment, hence he used the name Smells Like Teen Spirit. This stupid error allowed us to discover an amazing song and helped Teen Spirit deodorant see an unusual rise in sales. The irony of this misinterpretation captures exactly the core of grunge and Nirvana’s influence on mainstream culture. Cobain’s unintentional interpretation turned a commonplace product reference into an anthem for unhappy young people. Generation X responded to the song’s raw intensity and enigmatic yet relevant lyrics, which expressed their annoyance and contempt of social mores. For a generation that felt both empowered and disillusioned, lines like “Here we are now, entertain us” became their war cry. The knowledge that this cultural phenomenon arose from a misinterpreted quip on deodorant gives Nirvana’s legacy even more inadvertent genius.
