11. Polar Bear


Amazing animals, polar bears have evolved brilliantly to fit the hostile Arctic surroundings. Being top predators, they are well suited to live in one of the coldest regions on Earth. Their capacity to retain body heat is a vital adaptation that helps them to survive below freezing conditions; this is strikingly shown in thermal pictures where their bodies radiate warmth. Polar bears are masters of thermoregulation since over millions of years they have developed many physiological traits improving their heat retention.
Polar bear anatomy is fascinating mostly in terms of its black, black skin. Their capacity to absorb and hold heat is much enhanced by this dark tint. Covering their body, the hollow, transparent hairs trap air and provide extra warmth as insulators. These hairs let the bear’s dark skin receive sunlight, therefore enabling efficient solar energy absorption. This special mix of characteristics helps polar bears retain their internal body temperature even in extreme cold by means of a thick layer of subcutaneous fat ranging in thickness up to four inches.
Apart from their physical adaptations, polar bears show behavioural patterns to save heat. During especially cold conditions, they sometimes roll up or snuggle together to minimise exposed surface area and lower heat loss. Resting or sleeping, they will excavate a den in the snow to offer cold and weather protection. This action not only keeps them warm but also offers defence against any predators and strong weather.
Mostly hunting seals, polar bears grab them by waiting close to breathing holes in the ice. Since they have to remain unseen while waiting for their prey to surface, their hunting approach calls for stealth and patience. During these hunts, maintaining body heat is crucial since polar bears sometimes have to negotiate cold waters and spend protracted periods of time waiting in severe conditions.
Polar bears suffer major difficulties as climate change keeps affecting the Arctic habitat. Rising temperatures cause sea ice to melt, which decreases their hunting areas and makes food finding more challenging.
