Although this Halloween custom isn’t as common as it formerly was, it hasn’t entirely vanished. To “read the future,” people in the UK and Ireland used to peel apples and toss the peel behind them.

On the ground, the peel slice should curl into a form. The first initial of a prospective spouse is purportedly represented by the letter shape that the peel forms. This custom was originally practiced in Scotland using kale stalks rather of apples.
