Anyone not from the United States will definitely be raising an eyebrow at this custom. Turkey is traditionally roasted in the oven for everyone to enjoy on Thanksgiving. However, since 1940, one turkey has been excluded from this festival every year.

The official Thanksgiving custom dates back to 1989, and it involves the president of the United States “pardoning” a live, domesticated turkey. The turkey is taken to live in Mount Vernon, the former residence of U.S. President George Washington, and his life is spared from the dinner table.
