7. The Captain William Moore Bridge

Situated in Alaska’s Skagway Municipality
Founded in 1976
Price: $64.85 million
Engineers working for the State Department of Alaska created the Captain William Moore Bridge’s design in 1974. The bridge crosses the Moore Creek Gorge using a single-pylon, cable-stayed design. It links Whitehorse, Yukon, with Skagway, Alaska. The only way to connect the two regions before the bridge’s construction was by railroad.

Because the Moore Gorge is situated near a fault line, the William Moore Bridge only has anchors at the south bank end to reduce seismic damage. One subterranean bridge was opened to traffic, while the original Captain William Moore Bridge was converted into a historic site and pedestrian viewpoint.
