Harry Higginson was the principal designer of the 1880 Bridge. Mining access to the Central Otago goldfields was facilitated by the bridge. The Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge became a tourist attraction and a Category I historic place in 1963 when a roadway was built next to it.
