Joseph Strauss, a structural engineer, created the blueprints for the Golden Gate Bridge some 20 years before it was finished, and at the time, it was projected to cost more than $40 million. Keep in mind that this was in the 1930s. It turned out that the construction of “the world’s most photographed bridge” cost $39 million. That would be closer to $750 million in today’s currency.

The Golden Gate Bridge opened for commuter traffic on May 27, 1937, following more than four years of construction that started in 1933. This ancient San Franciscan icon was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time, measuring 4,200 feet for its main span and 746 feet in height.
