This escalator is the world’s shortest, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. With only 2.74 feet in height, the five-step escalator takes about eight seconds to move people from the bottom to the top.

The escalator, which is housed in the basement of Kawasaki More’s Department Store, links the store’s B2 floor with the Azalea subterranean shopping arcade. It’s odd that there are still steps you must climb in order to access the escalator before using it. It’s one of those haphazard creations that defies logic, which makes it ideal for the dialectic culture of Japan.
