Nissan offered the 180SX as a fastback vehicle for sale from 1988 until 1998. Its S13 chassis served as its foundation, and versions were only offered in Japan. Later variants had an SR20 motor, whereas earlier models had a CA18 motor. Some models were marketed as the 200SX and 240SX outside of Japan.

In 1994, the 180X was upgraded with the Type X trim level. In contrast to the R, the X had a higher trim level. However, purchasers were quick to point out to Nissan that the 180SX was essentially intact despite the addition of “Type X” to its nomenclature.
