As an old legacy, the Duchy of Lancaster was established in the middle of the thirteenth century. The duchy was given to Edmund Crouchbank, the son of King Henry III. The territories had previously belonged to Simon de Montfort, the Earl of Leicester, but in the 1200s, he gave them up to the King. Charles III, who was crowned king recently, is now the owner of the duchy.
