Since the Order of Merit (Ordre du Merite) was established in the early 1900s, a number of illustrious individuals—from common citizens to royalty—have worn this necklace. A person who resides in the United Kingdom’s Commonwealth is qualified to receive an Order of Merit.

With this honor, individuals are recognized for their outstanding contributions to the military, literature, the arts, and culture. It is given out by Queen Elizabeth II “at her pleasure.” The Order of Merit has been bestowed on a number of notable individuals, including Norman Foster, Sir Roger Penrose, Sir David Attenborough, The Lord Rothschild, and Sir Tom Stoppard.
